Exercise in Rehab: How Movement Is Paced After Detox

Exercise in rehab starts only after a physician clears it.

Medical detox at Faith Recovery Center usually runs about five to ten days, and exercise in rehab starts only after our physician decides the body can take it. Dr. Jason Giles, M.D., a board-certified physician who oversees medical protocols from detox assessment through residential care, makes that call for each of the eight patients we house at one time. Once cleared, clients have an on-site gym, a pool, gardens, and a tennis court at the Beverly Hills manor, plus yoga and mindfulness sessions scheduled alongside CBT and DBT. Movement earns a place in the day because it supports sleep, appetite, and mood while therapy and medical care do the heavier work.

Exercise in addiction treatment differs from the rehab you do after a knee surgery or a torn rotator cuff. Orthopedic rehab follows a therapist's protocol built around a specific joint, with resistance bands, range-of-motion drills, and a set number of repetitions. In addiction recovery the target is the whole person, and the measure of progress is whether you sleep through the night, eat regular meals, and tolerate restlessness without reaching for a substance.

How Exercise in Rehab Supports Recovery

Early sobriety usually arrives with broken sleep, a restless body, and a flat or irritable mood. Regular activity gives that energy somewhere to go, and clients often report falling asleep faster after a day that included a swim or a long walk. The National Institute on Drug Abuse has studied exercise as a possible complement to addiction treatment, and the evidence is still developing. We present movement as support for recovery rather than as a treatment on its own, and we would be skeptical of any program that claims otherwise.

Structure matters at least as much as the workout itself. A residential day with a fixed morning walk or an afternoon yoga class fills hours that used to belong to drinking or using, and over 30 to 90 days that schedule turns into a habit you can keep after discharge.

Most people in addiction treatment also live with anxiety, depression, or trauma symptoms, which is why psychiatric assessment at Faith Recovery begins on arrival. The CDC lists better mood and sleep among the benefits of regular physical activity. Our psychiatrist, Dr. Julio Meza, M.D., treats co-occurring conditions alongside substance use, and exercise is one of the tools a dual-diagnosis plan can include when he judges it appropriate.

Exercise and Wellness at Faith Recovery Center

With a maximum of eight patients at a time, activity is planned around each person's medical history and current condition rather than run as a drop-in class for a crowd. Dr. Giles reviews how withdrawal is progressing before anyone adds strength work, and physicians and nurses are on site around the clock if something changes mid-week.

A typical week mixes gentle and active options. You might start the morning with yoga and mindfulness, swim laps in the afternoon, train in the gym, play tennis, or walk the gardens between individual and group sessions. Chef-prepared meals matched to your dietary needs and 24/7 clinical support cover the parts of recovery that exercise cannot, which include nutrition, rest, and medical monitoring.

Activity does not end at discharge. Clients who step down to PHP or IOP stay with the same clinical team under the same roof, and discharge planning covers how you will stay active at home as part of relapse prevention.

Safe Progression After Detox and Warning Signs

Pacing comes first. Withdrawal from alcohol and benzodiazepines can affect heart rate, blood pressure, and balance, and a hard workout in that window is a genuine medical risk, which is why the gym stays off limits until Dr. Giles and the medical team clear it. Most clients begin with walking, stretching, or restorative yoga, then add strength work and longer sessions as sleep and appetite settle. Physical therapists use the same gradual-load principle after an injury, and it protects muscles and joints that may have sat idle for months.

Stop and tell the clinical staff if you feel chest pain, dizziness, a racing or irregular heartbeat, sharp joint pain, or unusual shortness of breath. Mild soreness a day later is normal, while pain that worsens during a session is a reason to end it. Overdoing it can also show up psychologically, as compulsive training, exercising to skip therapy, or panic when a workout is missed, and those patterns belong in a conversation with your therapist rather than in your head.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be fit to go to rehab?

You do not need to be fit. Activity is matched to your current health, many clients start with short walks, and Dr. Giles clears you before anything more demanding.

Is exercise required during treatment?

Participation is encouraged rather than forced. Your clinical team builds movement into your plan where it helps and adjusts it around injuries, medical needs, or how you feel on a given day.

Can I continue physical therapy for an injury while in treatment?

Tell admissions about the injury before you arrive so our scheduling can coordinate outside medical appointments when clinically appropriate. Staff can also help you keep up a home program your physical therapist prescribed, following that therapist's guidance on pain and progression rather than ours.

How do I stay active after leaving rehab?

Pick the one activity you actually enjoyed in treatment and put it on the calendar at a fixed time each week. Your aftercare plan, and PHP or IOP if you step down, gives you a team to call when the routine slips, and the routine will slip at some point.

If you or someone you love wants to talk through treatment, call admissions 24/7 at (844) 598-5573 for a confidential conversation and free insurance verification, and family members may call on a loved one's behalf. Faith Recovery Center is Joint Commission accredited and licensed by the California Department of Health Care Services under license 190130AP, with care overseen by licensed physicians, a psychiatrist, and licensed therapists. You can also reach admissions or begin insurance verification through our contact page at /contact/.
